After the Boat Show: What's Next for Yacht Buyers and Sellers?

The Show May Be Over. The Conversation Is Just Beginning.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show may be over, but for many buyers and sellers, the conversations are just getting started.

After several days of touring yachts, comparing models and meeting with brokers, there’s often a lot to think about. Some buyers leave with a clear favorite. Others discover that what they thought they wanted isn’t necessarily what suits them best.

For owners considering selling, the show can also provide a useful perspective on what’s available, how competing yachts are presented and what buyers are looking for.

So, what should happen once the docks return to normal?

For Buyers
Revisit the Yacht, Not Just the Memory

A quieter second look can help you evaluate the layout, equipment and ownership considerations that may have been difficult to absorb during a busy show.

For Sellers
Understand Where Your Yacht Fits

The weeks following FLIBS can provide useful perspective on competing yachts, asking prices, presentation and what buyers are currently comparing.

For Buyers

Take a Second Look

A boat show is an excellent place to explore a wide range of yachts, but it isn’t always the ideal environment for making a final decision.

With busy docks, back-to-back appointments and plenty of distractions, it’s easy to overlook details that become more important once the excitement of the show has passed.

If a particular yacht caught your attention, arrange another visit. Spend more time aboard, revisit the layout and ask the questions you didn’t get to during the show.

Think about how you’ll actually use the yacht. Are the accommodations right for your family? Does the layout work for entertaining? Is the yacht equipped for the type of cruising you have in mind?

For brokerage yachts, this is also the time to take a closer look at equipment, maintenance history and any upgrades that may have been made over the years.

A second showing often reveals things that weren’t immediately apparent the first time around.

Look Beyond the Listing

When comparing brokerage yachts, asking prices and specifications only tell part of the story.

Two yachts of the same model and year can be very different depending on how they’ve been maintained, equipped and used.

Review service records, understand the equipment onboard and consider any improvements you may want to make after purchase. Once you’ve identified a serious contender, your broker can help coordinate the appropriate inspections, survey and sea trial.

The goal is to understand the yacht you’re considering, not simply how it compares on paper.

For Sellers

Know Your Competition

For owners thinking about selling, the weeks following FLIBS are a good time to review how their yacht fits into the current market.

What comparable yachts are available? How do their asking prices, equipment and condition compare? Are there newer listings competing for the same buyers?

These are important questions because buyers rarely consider a yacht in isolation. They’re comparing options, often across several builders and model years.

Presentation also matters. Professional photography, accurate specifications, organized maintenance records and a yacht that’s readily available for showings can all influence how buyers respond to a listing.

And if your yacht is already on the market, it’s worth reviewing the feedback received so far. A conversation about pricing or presentation may be more productive than simply waiting for the next inquiry.

Keep the Conversation Going

One of the advantages of a major boat show is the opportunity to meet brokers, explore different yachts and begin narrowing your options. The real value often comes from the conversations that follow.

For buyers, that may mean revisiting a yacht, comparing a few remaining options or scheduling a sea trial. For sellers, it may mean reviewing recent comparable sales, refining a listing strategy or preparing a yacht to enter the market.

There isn’t one approach that works for every yacht or every owner. But taking the time to understand your options, ask the right questions and work with people who know the market can make the process considerably more productive.

Whether you’re considering your next yacht or thinking about selling, the OneWater Yacht Group brokerage team is available to help you evaluate your options and determine the next steps.
